2010 - cured!

OK, it's been so long that I forgot this blog even existed! Nonetheless, it apparently still gets some traffic, and I'm happy to learn that I might be able to help someone else out. James, this is for you!

In late 2006, I stumbled upon the work of John Sarno, MD. I ordered his (then) latest book, read through it, then put aside without really understanding. It didn't help that I had recently begun oral prednisone, which seemed to be the miracle I had needed. a few weeks went by, and I went on vacation. I had a great time...until the prednisone stopped working, despite repeated increases in dosage. I had to cut my vacation short, and I was terribly upset about it. My wife, having read the book as well, started talking with me about it on the flight back to Shanghai, and suddenly things clicked. I began doing what Sarno suggested, and within 2-3 weeks, I was 95% better. In no time at all it became a non-issue - a thing that would pop up once every few weeks for a minute or two as if to say "Hi, remember me? I'm still here! TREMBLE IN FEAR!". I would refuse, and it would quietly disappear.

It's amazing to me that this issue, which dominated my life so completely, is entirely gone and most days never enters my mind. Rather than explain how this great change came about, I'm just going to point you in the right direction with some links. If you have questions later, I'll be happy to answer them.

First, the books:

http://www.amazon.com/Mindbody-Prescription-Healing-Body-Pain/dp/0446675156

This was the book that changed everything for me. It is not, however, his latest work. Sorry, Blogspot is blocked in China, and I'm using a proxy to get to it. For some reason, I can't post the actual link.

http://www.amazon.com/Divided-Mind-Epidemic-Mindbody-Disorders/dp/0061174300/ref=pd_sim_b_1

This is the more recent book, which goes much deeper into explaining what's going on with people like myself. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent resource for conditions like mine.

http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=2

This forum is filled with great people with really tough issues; many of them have overcome their pain completely. They have helped me through some incredibly rough times.

James, I really hope you find your way out as fast as possible; you have my complete sympathy. No one should ever have to live in that kind of pain without at least knowing what's going on. I am much more skeptical of modern medicine as a result of my experience. The great news is, assuming you've been through all the appropriate medical tests and nothing life-threatening was found, I think the links above are your ticket out of the pain. I wish you the best of luck with this.

Cheers,

Me

Hi Scott,

Glad you posted. I've been to this site in the last few weeks and have a similar story - sever pain in my left testicle. Six weeks ago I thought I had a hernia. I went to my doctor and had an ultrasound which found no irregularities. My doctor then diagnosed me with epididymitis and put me on Doxycycline and Naproxen for 14 days. There was no improvement.

After the 14 days, I had a second ultrasound that found two cysts: a 0.4 cm cyst on the left epididymis and a 0.3 cm cyst on the right epididymis. My doctor then put me on Ciprofloxacin and Naproxen for 10 days. Again, no improvement.

After the 10 days of Ciprofloxacin, finally my doctor gave me a prescription for Tylenol 3. This is helping me manage my pain.

Yesterday, I saw a urologist who said the pain is from the cyst on the head of my left epididymis. The only thing I can do is wait for it to possibly clear up. Take some hot baths and try to work the cyst out by gently rubbing the cyst and epididymis. He then wrote me a prescription for Gabapentin.

I'm interested in how you were cured. I don't want to be on medication for a long period of time. I want to get back to my usual self and live my life.

Can you go into some more detail? What is in this book? I'm going to order it from Amazon today, but if you have any helpful information, I would be grateful!

Thanks,
Chris

hi all

glad to see this site is becoming active after laying dormant for so long!

I have been experiencing pain in my scrotum for 9 months now, and i have been scouring the internet regularly for possible causes, and (more importantly) treatments.

i am beginning to explore the notion that my pain is caused by repressed mental and emotional stress. I've ordered the Sarno book Scott suggested as well and I look forward to its arrival.

I have recently begun seeing a Pain Management Specialist, referred by my 3rd urologist.

I live in New York City and the NYU Pain Management Clinic was the only one I could find in the area that would take me (most pain clinics work only with neck and back pain).

I have been prescribed ultracet (tramadol/apap tablets) and neurontin (gabapentin), and also referred to NYU's Rusk Institute for Rehabilitative Medicine for physical therapy.

The Rusk Institiute is where Dr. Sarno practices, so I'm hoping to meet with the man himself and get checked for TMS.

Whether it turns out that TMS treatment works for me or not, I want to leave a note up here where the people of the internet will read it:

Don't give up! From what I can tell, about 50% of epididymitis cases resolve with the usual treatment: antibiotics, anti-inflammatory meds, support and rest.

For the rest of us, there are innumerable less common causes for epididymitis that doctors will be hesitant to test for or treat.

We have to do a lot of homework ourselves, in terms of locating doctors that will actually be helpful, and in terms of finding out what tests/procedures to suggest once we're in the office.

I, for example, saw 4 urologists before one of them offered to perform a cystoscopy (inserting a camera into the urethra to check for issues with the prostate, bladder, and the urethra itself).

thanks for the info
good luck to everyone else reading, because chances are that all of your nuts hurt just as bad as mine do!

Scott,

In January, I began having extreme pain in testical. I was diagnosed with epidydimitis. I took a weeks worth of antibiotics and the pain was cured. I won't go into detail, but less than a week later, something happened that caused me to think: "Uh oh, that felt weird. I really hope that pain isn't coming back". Sure enough, within hours the pain was back.

3+ months and several rounds of antibiotics later, I was still in pain and in severe panic and depression over my condition. Somehow through prayer and destiny, I stumbled upon your blog during one of my daily frantic google searches. Long story short, my groin pain is now gone for the most part besides a relapse every now and then when I start to dwell on the past.

My main point is that without finding this blog, I never would have been able to accept my condition as pyschological. There really isn't any information about Epididymitis being TMS. Your blog was what allowed me to fully accept it as TMS.

If I had never gone down the Sarno path, I can't imagine the horrors that I would still be living. The epidemic of chronic epididymitis is rampent through the internet if you check medical forums. All these years and people still suffer without a cure, and demand that doctors put more research into this area.

My doctor suggested that my only other option was to have epididymis removed, which would severely hamper my chance of having kids. How could our doctors possibly suggest such a destructive procedure for a condition that is blatantly a form of TMS pain? It gets worse, he at one point asked me if the pain had gone from one testicle to the other. It hadn't, but within a couple of days of him asking the question, it had starting hurting on the other side! It has also happened to others with the condition. How is there a physical explantion for this phenomonon? He fed me some BS about the nerves being connected or something.

I guess my main point is that without the TMS approach, I would probably have eventually had that surgery after trying everything else. And shortly after, I'm pretty sure the pain would shift to the other side, leaving in me all kinds of depression. Thank God, for the work of Dr. Sarno. I can only hope that other sufferers of chronic epididymits can find the same relief that I did. I would like to thank you for saving my life!
